We came to Tangkoko with specific targets: Knobbed Hornbill in clear morning light, the secretive Sulawesi Dwarf Kingfisher, and Spectral Tarsiers without disruptive white flashes. Stefen knew precisely which ficus trees were in fruit. At 05:45 on our second morning, we waited quietly beneath the canopy as mist lifted—a pair of hornbills glided directly into the boughs above us. No taped playback, no baiting, just patient fieldcraft.

Our priority was documenting Sulawesi Crested Black Macaques without disrupting their natural family structure. Stefen and his local tracker ensured we stayed downwind and observed from a respectful distance. Because the troop felt completely unthreatened, we witnessed juveniles playing and mothers grooming for over an hour. At sunset, we hiked to Batu Angus and photographed endemic hanging parrots. Truly world-class guiding.

Stefen was born in Batuputih and grew up listening to the rhythm of this forest. In dense bamboo gullies where other visitors would walk right past, he picked out the quiet whistling of the Green-backed Kingfisher. On the volcanic basalt ridge, he set up his spotting scope for White-necked Mynas and Spot-tailed Goshawk. Packed breakfasts at 05:00 and honest advice on species likelihood made our expedition completely stress-free.
